Frequently Asked Questions

What is TypeWerdly?

TypeWerdly is a free online typing speed test. You type randomly generated words against a timer and get your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy when time runs out. No account required.

How is WPM calculated?

WPM stands for words per minute. We use the standard definition where one "word" equals five characters. Your WPM is the total number of correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the elapsed time in minutes. Only characters in correctly completed words count toward your score.

How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is the percentage of characters you typed correctly out of all characters you attempted. If you typed 95 characters correctly out of 100 total keystrokes, your accuracy is 95%.

What time durations are available?

TypeWerdly offers four test durations: 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, and 120 seconds. Shorter tests are great for quick practice, while longer tests give a more stable measure of your true typing speed.

What words are used in the test?

The test uses a curated list of common English words. The words are randomly selected and shuffled for each test so no two tests are exactly the same. The word list focuses on everyday vocabulary to keep the test fair and accessible.

What is a good typing speed?

The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. Anything above 60 WPM is considered above average. Professional typists often reach 80–100 WPM, and competitive typists can exceed 150 WPM. Check out our blog post on typing speed benchmarks for more detail.

How does the leaderboard work?

After finishing a test, you can submit your score with a display name. Scores are ranked by WPM within each time duration. The leaderboard is public — no account or sign-up is needed. We reserve the right to remove scores that appear to be illegitimate.

Can I retake the test?

Yes, as many times as you want. Press the restart button or wait for the timer to finish, then start a new test. There are no limits on how many tests you can take.

Does TypeWerdly work on mobile?

TypeWerdly is optimized for desktop browsers with a physical keyboard. While the site will load on mobile devices, typing tests are designed for full-size keyboards and the experience may be limited on touchscreens.

Is TypeWerdly free?

Yes, completely free. There are no premium tiers, paywalls, or hidden features. The site is supported by non-intrusive ads that disappear while you type.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can take typing tests and submit scores to the leaderboard without creating an account or providing an email address. Just pick a display name when submitting your score.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practice consistently, focus on accuracy before speed, learn proper touch typing technique, and use all ten fingers. Avoid looking at the keyboard. Even 10–15 minutes of daily practice can lead to noticeable improvement within a few weeks.
